Celebrating Womanhood
It brings up a feeling of paradox whenever women think about womenhood and their collective status in the modern society, with the goddess Durga being prayed for power to the powerlessness a woman feels when she is harassed, with Ma Kaali prayed for her anger to a woman being shamed for her loud voice and for speaking out, we as a woman are in a state of constant chaos and turmoil about our positions, power, and role in today’s society.
Why is it that we need to remind people to treat women with the same amount of dignity that they’d like themselves to be treated with? Why do women are shamed for everything they do? For laughing out loud to being labelled as too arrogant to speak, for wanting intimacy to avoiding intimacy, for cooking too much or for not cooking at all? It seems women are laughed at and mocked about everything they do. They are always stereotyped to either too much or too little. But regardless of everything she has faced and is still facing, she never gives up trying. Keeping all the struggles and responsibilities a woman faces every day, let us look at why is there a need to celebrate women’s Day –
They say being born as a woman, one is empowered with highly precious powers that no other creature is blessed with, then why do we need to celebrate it more (given the fact they already have a special place in society)?
Well, to answer that, it was found that the resilience in women were way more than the other gender. It is because earlier when the jobs weren’t divided between a man and woman, both of them laid equal hand in earning and eating. But then modern MAN said, “I’ll do the hard part you do the easy one” and it was then people realized how much of a struggle was a woman putting up every single day and so to keep the glory of their contributions to the society alive, it was decided that there should be a separate day dedicated to the celebration of womanhood.
The idea was not born to counter those long disregarded but to recognise all that the women out there do to ensure proper functioning of the household, the society, the community and the nation without every complaining and it was also started to put aside a day of the year to recognise the advancements and struggles of women, the suffragist movement, the feminist movement and all the other movements and efforts put forth to improve the condition of women in the society over the years. International women’s Day is celebrated to support the women and acknowledge the immense sense of dignity and pride they’d given to the nation and the world for doing what they do. It is also in a way an encouragement to those who want to step out of those boxes, but they assumed that they cannot because there is no opportunity.
We all have heard stories of MEN at war, MEN in sports, MEN as chefs, and in all the other professions, but where are the songs of glory for women of various fields? It is on the women’s day every year that people from different walks, professions, classes, castes, creeds leave their differences behind to the sing the songs of women.
In conclusion, International Women’s day was born to honour, admire and recognize the work done by women in all walks of life.
Long live the pride and legacy of Warriors (read- women)! May we all continue to move forward with each passing moment!
